The MajesticVideo Review January 16, 2002 My wife and I watched "The Majestic" (PG) last night. It is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It gave me hope for America. Jim Carrey plays a serious role, and gives and outstanding performance. The movie probably puts an exaggerated spin on the anti-communist frenzy of the late fifties and early 60's, but I do believe they portray a perspective that is very much worth consideration. I would recommend it to everyone. Susan Carter (mother-in-law) recommended it to me as sure to become one of my favorites. She was
right.
Posted with permission From: <lawsas@qnis.net> rented it. I have prepared the most important words in the movie. Peter Appleton is before the Congress committee on communism. The following is his courage in a bad situation. I highly recommend this movie. (Peter) I Peter Appleton by way of perjurying myself, my indescetion . . . (Chair) Mr. Appleton . . . (Peter) I am sorry mr chairman (Peter)I think I need some water . . . (Chair)ok (Peter to counselor) I can't do this. (Counselor) Let's make this simple. You'll read that statement or you will go straight to jail for contempt. (Peter) Jail? (Man in background) Jail! Just read the damn statement. (Peter) I . . . Peter Appleton . . . (Chair) Mr. Appleton, the committee's patience is . . . is wearing thin. (Peter) I understand that Mr. Chairman. I sorry. . . I sorry, but it occurs to me that . . . there a bigger picture here today whether or not I am a communist. (Chair) A bigger issue? Actually Mr. Appleton, there is no bigger issue. (Peter) Actually I do not want to be contrary, but I think there is. Gosh, I don't know what to say. There is . .. I have never been a man of great convictions. I never saw the percentage in it. Quite frankly I suppose . . . I . . .ah . . . lack the courage. See I am not like Luke Tremble. He had the market cornered on those things. I never met the guy, but . . . I feel like I got to know him. The thing is I cannot help to wonder what he would say, if he was standing here right now. He would probably tell you that the America represented in this room is not the America that he died defending. I think he would tell you that your America is bitter, and cruel, and small . . . I know for a fact that his America is big. . . Bigger than you can imagine . . With a wide open heart . . . Where every person has a voice. Even though you don't like what they have to say. (Chair) you are out of order. (Chair) Enough. You are out of order. (Peter) If he were here; how would you respond. You could explain to him what has happened to his America. (Chair) Mr. Appleton you are skating on the edge of contempt. (Peter) That the first thing I have heard today that I completely agree with. (Counsel) Mr. Chairman, Mr. Chairman. Mr. Chairman, my client is under a lot of strain because of the belligerent questioning by Mr. Cline. He is, therefore, not responsible for his statement. This time, we now wish to invoke the 5th Amend. (Peter)No we don't. (Counselor) Yes we do. Peter) No, Kevin, we don't . . . so knock it off. (18:32) ?? get thru this. The 5th Amendment is out of the question. But there is another amendment I wish to invoke. I wonder if anyone here is familiar with it. Congress will make no law respecting establishment of religion . . (chair) Mr. Appleton you out of order! Congress will make no law respecting . . . Chair) you are out of order! . . . establishment of religion . . . or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or bridging the freedom of speech, or the press, the right of the people to assemble and petition the government for the redress of grievances, . . . (Chair) You will not presume to lecture this committee . . . Peter) That is the first amendment. It is everything we are about, Mr. Chairman. If only we lived up to it. (Mr. Cline) Let him talk. He is only hanging himself. (Peter) It's the most important part of the contract. Every citizen has with this country. Even though this contract, the constitution, and the bill of rights, even though they are pieces of paper, with signatures on them, they are the only contracts we have, most definitely not subject to renegotiation, not by you, Mr. Chairman, . . . (Chair) Mr. Appleton . . . Peter) not by you, Mr. Cline, . . . (Chair) You will stand down . . . (Peter). . . by anyone, ever. Too many people have paid for this contact in blood . . . (Chair) You have said enough, you are out of order . . . (Peter) People like Luke Tremble . . . and all the sons of Lawson, California . . . (Old man in Lawson) Damn right and they deserve better than this. All you boys do. (Chair) I will have order or I will clear this chamber. (Peter) When you get right down to it, that is all I have to say to this committee. (Chair) You are not excused sir. The witness will resume your seat. You are not excused, sir. You will resume your seat . . . . Maybe you are interested in how he got to the congress and what happens afterwards. Enjoy! Take care . . . .
