R.E. Impeachment Proceedings
September 22, 1998
Dear Congressmen,
One of the sentiments being repeatedly expressed by the White House and carried by the
media regarding the question as to whether or not impeachment proceedings should commence
for President Clinton, is that the American People are the "jury."
"This is, after all, a democracy," they say. NOT!
This is utterly false. We are a Constitutional Republic. A Democracy takes stock of the
opinion of all its citizens and then goes with the majority vote. That is as impossible as
it is dangerous.
Here is one of the most significant reasons why...: THE MEDIA; the agents of public
opinion.
The general public merely regurgitates the brainwashing spin that is put on the facts
by the media, which is dominated by liberals. Hence the media want the verdict to be
passed by the people, for then it is actually they, the liberal press, who get to fashion
the majority outcome. Hence the current (misleading) emphasis on the idea of polling the
American people then expecting that to be the verdict, reflected in the Congressmen's
votes.
Let me repeat. WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY, WE ARE A REPUBLIC! In a Republic, the people
vote for individuals to represent them. They vote for people whom they can best trust to
faithfully study out the issues appropriately and then vote according to their conscience.
This fact of media spin is not a negative reflection on the people nearly so much as it
is of the leaders who allow this sentiment to prevail. The general populous believes what
they are told, not because they are gullible so much as because they want to be trusting.
Their trust should not be violated. They are being taken advantage of. This must stop.
Should the public be informed of the proceedings? Definitely. Should the
representatives consult with their constituents? Absolutely. Should their final vote be an
attempt to represent a majority vote of their constituents? No, not necessarily!
If each and every constituent possessed the same amount of information as the
representative, and voted according to their moral conscience, then that majority vote
would be reasonable. But in practice that is impossible, for the constituents have other
matters in which their lives are concerned and focused; hence the inspired beauty of a
representative government.
Though representatives are entrusted to act well in their position, it does not stop
there: with a blank check at the day of the election. Each citizen in a free republic is
responsible before God for the manner in which they conduct their own lives, including how
they hold their representatives accountable to correct principles. May I recommend for
your review a fitting verse of scripture? It is Doctrine & Covenants 50:2-9. Though it
was written mainly on a church level, I believe its principles apply to a nation as well.
Please, congressman, vote your conscience. On this matter, the proper course is
blatantly obvious. "Impeach, indict, incarcerate," as my friend Brian Gibson so
well annunciated.
Sincerely,
