Subject: Editorial: some freedoms restored, more freedoms lost

Editor,

Hey, here's a news story in which freedoms are actually being restored. A
rare Hooray for Utah!

"Utah lawmakers called a parade of agency representatives before the
Administrative Rules Review Committee on Tuesday and ordered them to revise
their rules to comply with state law granting near-universal access to
concealed weapons licenses." (SL Tribune Dec. 12)

However, in the same paper, also on the front page, this one at the top, is
a story of an airport raid resulting in the arrest of 69 individuals who
provided false information to employers to gain low-paying jobs in secure
areas. "None was terror threat, officials say."
("Airport Sweep Nets Dozens"
http://www.sltribune.com/2001/dec/12122001/utah/157428.htm)

Though I do not agree with providing false information, arrest is far too
harsh a consequence, and is evidence of a growing police state that is
putting civil rights aside.

Why are things like this happening?

Because of the terrorist attack of 911, an attack which certain elements in
the shadow government knew was coming and allowed to happen so they could do
just these sorts of things on a wide scale, fast-tracking an Orwellian
world.

Those behind such an arrest are by far the worse criminals in my opinion,
and are far more deserving arrest. Let's stop them, especially the ones who
are masterminding this pel mel rush into a socialist New World Order police
state.

Sincerely,

Sterling D. Allan

State Agencies Ordered to Revise Concealed-Weapons Rules
Wednesday, December 12, 2001

BY DAN HARRIE
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Officials at many state agencies will soon be busy writing new rules to
clarify that legally concealed weapons are exempt from dozens of regulations
banning guns at locales ranging from child-care centers to state parks.
Utah lawmakers called a parade of agency representatives before the
Administrative Rules Review Committee on Tuesday and ordered them to revise
their rules to comply with state law granting near-universal access to
concealed weapons licensees. The action came on the heels of a legal opinion
by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff that many state gun rules are illegal,
and thus "null and void." [...]

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Law officers on Tuesday rounded up dozens of workers accused of
providing false information to employers to gain low-paying jobs in secure
areas of Salt Lake City International Airport.

U.S. Attorney for Utah Paul Warner said most of the 69 people charged
had access to planes, runways and cargo areas, but he emphasized there is no
evidence to suggest they have ties to terrorism.

The seven-week investigation, dubbed "Operation Safe Travel," assures
the airport "is the safest in the country," Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky
Anderson said at an afternoon news conference.

The mayor added that since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it has never
been more important "to ensure these restricted areas are secure."

Salt Lake City's investigation could be the model for similar probes at
airports throughout the nation, said Todd Zinser, deputy inspector general
for the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Warner said the upcoming Winter Olympics made the investigation more
pressing. [...]
