Subject: [888] Report on John Bayley's Visit to Manti Last Night
REPORT OF JOHN BAYLEY'S VISIT TO MANTI LAST NIGHT
It was my fortunate privilege to have been able to attend the visit of John
Bayley in the basement of the Manti Library last night, along with some 50-70
others, some from as far away as Salt Lake City.
Several months have passed since he was last here, but hopefully he will be
coming regularly like he did before -- but this time without being hamstrung.
The politics of religion had killed the ministry he was performing last year
here for several months. But those chains have been removed, and John is now
free to minister as the Lord would have him.
He is a truly gifted man of God, being especially talented in his musical and
inspirational speaking abilities -- which is how he began our little meeting
last night after the pot luck dinner was through. He began strumming the tune
that has become familiar to many of us who have known him from before:
"Jammin' in the Rhythm of the Holy Ghost."
There is something about music to set the tone of praise and ministry, and
John is particularly gifted in this regard.
We then sat spell-bound as he told of us recent visit to Hawaii at the
invitation of the President of BYU Hawaii to perform for them and to speak at
an assembly of several hundred individuals.
Here he is, a black fellow, with beads in his hair, who plays an electric
guitar and sings praises to the Lord with cheerful enthusiasm, and speaks with
a great deal of passion, not LDS himself, being invited to speak to an LDS
crowd. He said he has never experience anything like when he was singing, and
the 100-voice BYU-Hawaii student choir joined in as he strummed out his theme
song, "Jammin' in the Rhythm of the Holy Ghost." They were dancing
to the tune as well. Picture that!
He said that when he was through singing and ministering, that the President
of the university got up and said, "What can I say after that? All I can
say is, 'AMEN.' " He then added his testimony that Jesus Christ is the
one sure foundation upon which we can build.
The Spirit of the Lord was so strong in the room that physical healing took
place.
After the meeting, the Vice President of the university came up to John with
tears streaming down her face. She said that she was a fifth generation
Mormon, and that a few years ago she had developed a tumor in her brain that
had to be surgically removed, but which removed all of her memory as well. She
said that while John was singing, her memory was completely restored --
everything.
He then prophesied to her by the Spirit that her grandson, who was afflicted
with the same ailment, was now also healed. She affirmed that he had indeed
had the same tumor. Then John continued, telling her that the spirit of
insanity that had afflicted her husband was being 'canceled,' by the Spirit of
God. At that she fainted on the floor. Her husband had been in the insane
asylum for five years. John had no way of knowing.
Yes, God is doing something amazing on this earth -- many things. This is but
a small taste of what he will yet pour out. The gifts of the Spirit are going
to be far more extant then they have been.
John loves this little crazy town of Manti and the gathering of 'crazy' people
who have only about one thing in common -- they love the Lord. It really is
quite a diverse group that shows up.
Comparing the church of God to the computer that benefits when the hard drive
is 'defragmented,' John said, 'What we need is a defragmentation of the church
of God.'
He told of how when the President of BYU-Hawaii was done making his remarks
following those of John, that he held out his arms to embrace John. As the two
hugged, John said that the entire assembly stood and gave a resounding
standing ovation.
Yes, God is working miracles, not only of physical healing, but of emotional,
social -- indeed of every aspect.
What a marvelous day this is in which we live!
God is good!
There were other words of wonder spoken last night, which I will not attempt
here to capture. Suffice it to say, John is a very impressive person with not
only a great deal of wisdom, but with an open mind to the ways of God that so
often go against the traditions of men (and cemented by religious creeds) and
which are thus resisted by most. He spoke, for example, of man's great
potential, not only as children of God, but as heirs to all that He has
(implying that this includes godhood itself). He spoke of all living things
having an intelligence that is part of God, and through which God manifests
his glory and oneness. (I am paraphrasing here of course.)
John is not a man of ego, looking for a following. He only is seeking to be an
instrument through which God can work, as he has been called, to help many
others be the instruments they are destined to be as well.
Thanks John, for coming again. We will look forward to your many returns, but
we recognize that it is not you we are excited about as much as it is the work
of God of which you are a part, as we all are.
The glory be to God, as we serve him in bringing about his great and marvelous
work.
Sincerely,
Sterling D. Allan
