419 & Advance Fee Fraud
Email message from the 419 Coalition, an organization
fighting this scam, who explain the real dangers of the scam.
Sir:
We [. . .] would like you to reconsider certain of the data [. . .].
Although the FBI was correct in that the banking info you sent the
419ers could have been used in an attempt to clear out the account,
attempts to do this are Very rare and it is more difficult to do than
has been indicated to you.
The actual goal of the 419ers is to get you to voluntarily get you to
send Advance fees to them when "problems" arise. The only
reason they actually ask for your banking info is to add Credibility to
what they are saying about having money to transfer Into it. It is
really a confidence-ploy -- the account stripping thing is, as said,
very very rare.
That the goal of the 419ers is to reach in and strip a target's account
is a common canard which we have been fighting for years, as it gives a
misconception about what 419 is all about ---- which is the Voluntary
transmission of funds from the target to the 419ers. It is surprising
that the FBI guy told you what he did --- he must be confused about the
matter himself, which is not uncommon. Most of the Government people
have only been assigned to anti-419 operations for a couple of years, it
is hard for them to maintain continuity in analysis of 419 operations
etc. We on the other hand have had the same personnel on the matter for
nearly ten years continuously now, longer than any Government operatives
of which we are aware.
You can confirm what we are saying by checking with the Experts on 419
operations at USSS 419 Task Force at the phone numbers given on the
site.
As said, we are glad of your help and would like very much to put in a
link, but we don't want to confuse people as to the nature of 419
operations, as the matter is already confusing enough anyway.
Perhaps you could edit up the info and get back to us? It is a rally
good article y'all have done and it was a lot of work to do it, and we
do appreciate it. We and the G need all the help we can get in this
matter :) :)
