I Nephi 20
(Isaiah 48)
I Nephi 20
(Isaiah 48)
I Nephi 22
1 Hearken and hear this, 1 And again: Hearken, 7 And it meaneth that the time cometh
O house of Jacob,
who are called by the name of Israel,
O ye house of Israel, that after all the house of Israel
and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, all ye that are broken off have been scattered
or out of the waters of baptism, and are driven out and confounded,
who swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, yet they swear not in truth nor in righteousness. because of the wickedness of the pastors of my people; that the Lord God will raise up a mighty nation among the Gentiles,
2 Nevertheless, they call themselves of the holy city, yea, all ye that are broken off, yea, even upon the face of this land;
but they do not stay themselves upon the God of Israel, that are scattered abroad, who are of my people, O house of Israel. and by them shall our seed be scattered.
8 And after our seed is scattered
who is the Lord of Hosts; yea, the Lord of Hosts is his name. Listen, O isles, unto me, the Lord God
3 Behold, I have declared and hearken will proceed to do a marvelous work
the former things ye people from far; among the Gentiles,
from the beginning; the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother which shall be of great worth unto our seed;
and they went forth hath he made mention of my name. wherefore, it is likened
out of my mouth, 2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; unto their being nourished by the Gentiles
and I showed them. in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and being carried in their arms and upon their shoulders.
I did show them suddenly. and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; 9 And it shall also be of worth unto the Gentiles;
4 And I did it 3 And said unto me: Thou art my servant, O Israel, and not only unto the Gentiles but unto all the house of Israel,
because I knew in whom I will be glorified. unto the making known
that thou art obstinate, 4 Then I said, I have labored in vain, of the covenants of the Father of heaven unto Abraham, saying:
In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth
be blessed.
and thy neck is an iron sinew, I have spent my strength for naught
and thy brow brass; and in vain;
5 And I have even from the beginning declared to thee; before it came to pass I showed them thee; surely my judgment is with the Lord, 10 And I would, my brethren, that ye should know that all the kindreds of the earth cannot be blessed
and I showed them for fear lest thou shouldst say--mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image hath commanded them. and my work with my God. unless he shall make bare his arm in the eyes of the nations.
6 Thou hast seen and heard all this; and will ye not declare them? And now, saith the Lord--that formed me from the womb that I should be his servant, 11 Wherefore, the Lord God will proceed to make bare his arm in the eyes of all the nations,
And that I have showed thee new things to bring Jacob again to him in bringing about his covenants and his gospel
from this time, --though Israel be not gathered, unto those who are of the house of Israel.
even hidden things, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. 12 Wherefore, he will bring them again out of captivity,
and thou didst not know them. 6 And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and they shall be gathered together to the lands of their inheritance;
7 They are created now, and not from the beginning, and to restore the preserved of Israel. and they shall be brought out of obscurity and out of darkness;
even before the day when thou heardest them not they were declared unto thee, lest thou shouldst say -- Behold I knew them. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth. and they shall know that the Lord is their Savior and their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel.

bullet  Comments about Parallel

The I Nephi 20 = 21 (Isaiah 48 = 49) portion of the parallel in the left two columns are the most obvious.  Most of the time the matches to I Nephi 22 in the right hand column are not obvious, except at the beginning and end portions.  Don't expect to pick up on all the correlations immediately.  Some take more pondering than others.

bullet  Circumstances of Discovery

Winter of '92 while on a 40-day trek via motorcycles across the desert from Sanpete valley to near the Oregon coast.  Accompanying a friend, Tom, who had placed caches of supplies along the way with the intent to take his extended family members and anyone else who showed up back to safety in Utah, if the Soviets should attack as some had seen in vision they might do.  (Sounds crazy, I know, but those were the circumstances.)

Schopenhauer
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
