Nephi's Account of the
Israelites' Entering the Land
(1 Nephi 17:32-35,40,41) |
Moses' Prophecy of the
Israelites' Entering the Land
(Deuteronomy 9:1-7) |
| A |
v32 And after they had
crossed the river Jordan |
v1 Hear, O Israel: Thou art
to pass over Jordan this day, |
| B |
he did make them mighty |
to go in to possess nations greater
and mightier than thyself, cities
great and fenced up to heaven, |
|
(cont.) |
v2 A people great
and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou
hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
v3 Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which
goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them,
and he shall bring them down before thy face: |
| C |
unto the driving
out of the children of the land, |
so shalt thou drive
them out, |
| D |
yea, unto the scattering them
to destruction. |
and destroy
them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee. |
| E |
v33 And now, do ye suppose |
v4 Speak not thou in thine heart, |
| F |
that the children of this land, who
were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our
fathers, |
after that the Lord thy God hath cast
them out from before thee, |
| G |
do ye suppose that they were righteous? |
saying, For my righteousness
the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: |
| H |
Behold, I say unto you, Nay. |
but for the
wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee. |
| I |
v34 Do ye suppose that our
fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous?
I say unto you, Nay.
v35 Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous
is favored of God. |
v5 Not for thy righteousness,
or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land:
[See Deut. 10:17 "For the Lord your God is God of
gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth
not persons, nor taketh reward."] |
| J |
But behold, this
people had rejected every word of God, and they
were ripe in iniquity; and the fulness of the wrath of God
was upon them; |
but for the wickedness
of these nations |
| K |
and the Lord did curse
the land against them, |
the Lord thy God doth drive
them out from before thee, |
| L |
and bless it 1unto
our fathers....
v40 And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he
loved 1our fathers,
and 2he covenanted with them, yea, even 3Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob; and 4he remembered
2the covenants 5which
he had made; |
and that 4he may
perform 2the word 5which
the Lord sware 1unto
thy fathers, 3Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. |
| M |
wherefore, |
v6 Understand therefore, |
| N |
he |
that the Lord thy God |
| O |
did bring them out of the land
of Egypt. |
giveth thee not this good land
to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people. |
| P |
v41 And he did straiten
them |
v7 Remember, and forget not, how thou
provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath |
| Q |
in the
wilderness |
in the
wilderness: |
| R |
with his rod; |
from the day that thou didst depart
out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, |
| S |
for they |
ye |
| T |
hardened their hearts
EVEN AS YE HAVE; |
have been rebellious |
| U |
and the Lord straitened them
because of their iniquity. |
against the Lord. |
The phrase omitted (for emphasis) from verse 35 in element L, where
the text skips forward to verse 40, is "yea, he did curse it
against them unto their destruction, and he did bless
it unto our fathers unto their obtaining power over it."
