2 Nephi 25 |
| 4 And now, behold, I would speak
unto you concerning |
v6(cont) and I have made mention
unto my children concerning |
| things which are, |
the judgments of God, |
| and which are to come; |
which hath come to pass
among the Jews, |
| wherefore, I will read you |
unto my children, |
| the words of Isaiah. |
according to all that which Isaiah
hath spoken, |
| And they are the words
|
and I do not write them.
[For they are unveiled in the own due time of the
Lord.] |
|
which my brother has desired that I should
speak unto you. |
7 But behold, I proceed with
mine own prophecy, |
|
And I speak unto you for your sakes, |
according to my plainness; |
|
that ye may learn and glorify the name
of your God. |
in the which I know that no man can err; |
|
5 And now, the words which I shall read are they which
Isaiah spake |
nevertheless, in the days that the prophecies of
Isaiah |
|
concerning all the house of Israel;
[covenant people] |
shall be fulfilled
[covenant promises] |
|
wherefore, they may be likened unto you, |
men shall know of a surety,
at the times when they shall come to pass.
8 Wherefore, they are of worth |
|
for ye are of the house of Israel. |
unto the children of men, |
|
And there are many things which have been spoken by
Isaiah |
and he that supposeth that they are not, unto them will I
speak particularly, |
| which may be likened unto you, |
and confine the words unto mine own
people;
for I know that they shall be of great worth
unto them in the last days;
for in that day shall they understand them;
|
|
because ye are of the house of Israel. |
wherefore, for their good |
|
6 And now, these are the words: Thus
saith the Lord God: |
have I written them. |
|
Behold, I will lift up mine hand |
9 And as one generation hath been destroyed |
|
to the Gentiles,
[last shall be first.] |
among the Jews
[first shall be last] |
|
and set up my standard to the people;
[To be the salt of the earth]
[the husbandmen of the Lord]
|
because of iniquity,
[@...has lost its savor...@ (3 Ne. 16:15)]
[@...will
he miserably destroy...@ (Matt. 22:41)]
|
|
and they shall bring thy sons
in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried
upon their shoulders.
[Redemption]
|
even so have they been destroyed from generation
to generation
[See 1 Ne. 17:37; Jer.1:10]
[See D&C 133:57-59]
[destruction] |
 | 7 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, |
 | and their queens thy nursing mothers; |
|
according to their iniquities;
[Isa. 26:5 "he bringeth them down that dwell on
high"] |
|
they shall bow down to thee with their faces
towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; |
and never hath any of them been destroyed
|
|
and thou shalt know that I am the
Lord; |
save it were foretold them |
| for they shall not be ashamed that wait
for me. |

"Messiah Again the Second Time" |
|
a 8 And now I,
Jacob,
b would speak somewhat concerning these words.
b For behold, the Lord has shown
a me |
10 Wherefore, it hath been told them
|
|
c that those who were at Jerusalem,
d from whence we came,
e have
been slain
|
e
concerning the destruction which should come upon them,
d immediately after my father
left
c Jerusalem; nevertheless, they hardened their
hearts;
(a/b) and according to my prophecy
e they have
been destroyed,
|
|
and carried away captive.
|
save it be those which are carried away captive
into Babylon. |
|
9 Nevertheless, the Lord has shown unto
me
|
11 And now this I speak because of the spirit
which is in me. |
| that they should return again. |
A And notwithstanding
they have been carried away they shall return again,
b and possess the land of Jerusalem;
A wherefore, they shall be restored again
b to the land of their
inheritance.
c 12 But,
behold, they shall have wars, and rumors of wars;
|
|
And he also has shown unto me |
and when the day cometh [prophecy] |
|
that the Lord God, |
that the Only Begotten of the Father, |
|
the Holy One of Israel, |
yea, even the Father of heaven and of
earth, |
|
should manifest himself unto them in the flesh;
and after he should manifest himself |
shall manifest himself unto them in the flesh, |
|
they should scourge him and crucify
him, |
behold, they will reject him, |
|
according to the words of the angel who spake it unto
me.
[gifts of the spirit, revelation] |
because of their iniquities,
[refusing to hear voice of good
shepherd] |
|
10 And after they have hardened their hearts |
and the hardness of their hearts, |
|
and stiffened their necks |
and the stiffness of their necks. |
|
against the Holy One of Israel, |
13 Behold, they will crucify him; |
|
[omission for emphasis and
fill-in-the-blank parallel to the latter-days]
|
a-1 and after he is laid in a sepulchre for the space
of three days he shall rise from the dead,
a-2 with healing in his wings;
a-3 and all those who shall believe on his name shall be
saved in the kingdom of God.
b-1 Wherefore, my soul
b-2 delighteth
c-1 to prophesy
c-2 concerning him,
c-1 for I have seen
c-2 his day,
b-1 and my heart
b-2 doth magnify his holy name.
a-1 14 And behold it shall come to pass that after the
Messiah hath risen from the dead,
a-2 and hath manifested himself unto his people,
a-3 unto as many as will believe on his name, |
|
behold, the judgments of the Holy One of
Israel shall come upon them. |
behold, Jerusalem shall be destroyed again; |
|
And the day cometh that they shall be smitten and
afflicted. |
for wo unto them that fight against God and
the people of his church. |
|
11 Wherefore, after they |
15 Wherefore, the Jews |
|
are driven to and fro, |
shall be scattered among all nations; |
|
for thus saith the angel, many shall be afflicted in
the flesh, |
yea, and also Babylon |
|
and shall not be suffered to perish,
[Israel purified] |
shall be destroyed;
[Babylon destroyed] |
|
because of the prayers of the faithful; |
wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered by other nations. |
|
they shall be scattered, |
16 And after they have been
scattered, |
|
and smitten, |
and the Lord God hath scourged them |
|
and hated;
|
by other nations for the space of many generations, yea,
even down from generation to generation |
|
nevertheless, the Lord will be merciful unto
them, |
until they shall be persuaded |
|
that when they shall come to the knowledge |
to believe |
|
of their Redeemer, |
in Christ, the Son of God, |
|
they shall be gathered together again to
the lands of their inheritance.
[for the sake of collective salvation] |
and the atonement,
[for the sake of individual salvation] |
|
12 And blessed are the Gentiles, |
which is infinite for all mankind-- |
|
[The Gentiles:]
a-1 they of whom the
prophet has written;
a-2 for behold, if it so be that they shall repent and fight not
against Zion,
a-3 and do not unite themselves to that great and abominable church,
[oppressors]
b they shall be saved;
c for the Lord God will fulfil his covenants
which he has made unto his children;
b and for this cause
a-1 the prophet has written these things.
a-2 13 Wherefore, they that fight against Zion and the covenant
people of the Lord
a-3 shall lick up the dust of their feet; |
and when that day shall come
|
|
and the people of the Lord |
that they shall believe in
Christ, |
|
shall not be ashamed. |
and worship the Father in his name, |
|
For the people of the Lord |
with pure hearts and clean hands, |
|
are they who wait for
him;
for they still wait
[mandate for the Gentiles] |
and look not forward any
more
[mandate for the Jews] |
|
for the coming of the Messiah.
[second coming] |
for another Messiah,
[already came; first coming] |
|
14 And behold, according to the words of
the prophet,
|
then, at that time, the day will come that it must needs
be expedient that they should believe these things. |
|
the Messiah |
17 And the Lord |
|
will set himself |
will set his hand |
|
again the second time |
again the second time |
|
to recover |
to restore |
|
them; |
his people from their lost and fallen state. |
|
wherefore, he will |
Wherefore, he will |
|
manifest himself unto them in power |
proceed to do a marvelous work |
|
and great glory, |
and a wonder |
|
unto the destruction of their enemies, |
among the children of men. |
|
when that day cometh when they shall believe in him;
and none will he destroy that believe in him. |
18 Wherefore, he shall bring forth his
words unto them, |
|
15 And they that believe not in him |
which words shall judge them |
|
shall be destroyed, [x 6]
both by fire,
and by tempest,
and by earthquakes,
and by bloodsheds,
and by pestilence,
and by famine.
|
at the last day,
|
a And they
shall know
b that the Lord is God,
b the Holy One of Israel. And
they shall know
b that the Lord is God,
b the Holy One of Israel.
|
a for they shall be given them for
the purpose of convincing them
b-1 of the true
Messiah,
b-2 who was rejected by them;
for they shall be given them for the purpose of convincing them
a and unto the convincing
them
b-1 that they need not look
forward any more for a Messiah to come, for there should
not any come, save it should be a false Messiah which
should deceive the people; for there is save one Messiah
spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he
b-2 who should be rejected of the Jews.
a 19 For according to the words of the prophets,
B the Messiah
cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem;
a and according to the words of the prophets,
a and also the word of the angel of God,
B his name shall be Jesus
Christ, the Son of God. and unto the convincing
them
b-1 that they need not look
forward any more for a Messiah to come, for there should
not any come, save it should be a false Messiah which
should deceive the people; for there is save one Messiah
spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he
b-2 who should be rejected of the Jews.
a 19 For according to the words of the prophets,
B the Messiah
cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem;
a and according to the words of the prophets,
a and also the word of the angel of God,
B his name shall be Jesus
Christ, the Son of God. and unto the convincing
them
b-1 that they need not look
forward any more for a Messiah to come, for there should
not any come, save it should be a false Messiah which
should deceive the people; for there is save one Messiah
spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he
b-2 who should be rejected of the Jews.
a 19 For according to the words of the prophets,
B the Messiah
cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem;
a and according to the words of the prophets,
a and also the word of the angel of God,
B his name shall be Jesus
Christ, the Son of God.
a 20 And now, my brethren, I have spoken
plainly that ye cannot err. |
|
[At the second coming of the Messiah]
a 16 For shall the prey
b be taken from
c the
mighty,
a or the lawful captive
b delivered?
D
17 But thus saith the Lord:
a Even the captives
c of the
mighty
b shall be taken away,
a and the prey
c of the
terrible
b shall be delivered; |
[R.E. first gathering]
D
And as the Lord God liveth
b that brought
a Israel
b up out of
c the land
of Egypt,
|
e for the Mighty God
f shall deliver
g his
covenant people. |
e and gave unto Moses power
f that he should heal
g the
nations
f after they had been bitten
e by the poisonous serpents, [opp.]
g if they
f would cast their eyes
e unto the serpent
f which he did raise up
g before them,
[shape of serpent] |
a For thus saith the Lord: I
will contend with them that contendeth
b with thee-- |
b. and also gave him
a. power |
c 18 And I will feed
them
d that oppress
e thee, |
e
that he
d should smite
c the rock |
f with their own flesh;
g and they shall be drunken
f with their own blood
g as with sweet wine;
[They refuse the atoning flesh and blood of
Jesus Christ that might have saved them
from reaping the justice they deserved.] |
and the water should come
forth;
[Soldiers pierce Jesus (the rock) with
a sword and water comes forth] |
| and all flesh |
yea, behold I say unto you, |
|
shall know |
C that as these
things are true,
C and as the Lord God liveth, |
|
C that I the Lord
C am thy Savior
C and thy Redeemer,
C the Mighty One of Jacob. |
there is none other name
given under heaven save it be this Jesus Christ, of which
I have spoken, whereby man can be saved. |

2 Nephi 25 (cont.) |
|
1 Yea, for thus saith the Lord: Have I put thee
away,
[Note opposite contrasts] |
21 Wherefore, for this cause hath the Lord God promised
unto me that these things which I write shall be kept |
|
or have I cast thee off forever? |
and preserved, |
|
For thus saith the Lord: Where is the bill |
and handed down [above reference
to Athese things@] |
|
of your mother's divorcement? |
unto my seed, from generation to generation, |
|
To whom have I put thee away, |
that the promise may be fulfilled unto Joseph, |
|
[Irony of Joseph =s being
sold into slavery bringing salvation to all his father=s
household.]
or to which of my creditors have I sold you?
Yea, to whom have I sold you? |
that his seed should never perish |
|
Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, |
as long as the earth should stand. |
|
and for your transgressions |
22 Wherefore, these things shall go from generation
to generation |
|
is your mother |
as long as the earth |
|
put away. |
shall stand; |
|
2 Wherefore, when I came, |
and they shall go |
|
there was no man; |
according to the will and pleasure of God; |
|
a-1 when I
a-2 called,
b-1 yea, there was none
b-2 to answer.
|
b-1 and the nations who shall possess
them
b-2 shall be judged of them
a-2 according to the words
which are written.
a-1 23 For we labor diligently
a-2 to write, |
|
O house of Israel, |
to persuade our children, and also our brethren, |
|
is my hand shortened at all [Is God lukewarm?] |
to believe in Christ, [with all heart, might, mind] |
|
that it cannot redeem, |
and to be reconciled to God; |
|
or have I no [Question] |
for we know that [Answer] |
|
power to deliver? |
it is by
grace that we are saved, |
|
Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea,
I make their rivers a wilderness and their fish to stink
because the waters are dried up, and they die because of thirst.
3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make
sackcloth their covering. |
after all we can do.
[As well as man might put forth his puny arm...]
|
|
4 The Lord God hath given [it is a
gift] |
24 And, notwithstanding
[...all we can do] |
|
me |
we |
|
the tongue of the learned, |
believe [those who b. speak with
tongue of angels] |
|
that I should know |
in Christ, |
|
how to [minutia of keeping law] |
we keep |
|
speak a word |
the law of Moses, |
|
in season unto thee, O house of Israel. |
and look forward with steadfastness unto
Christ, until the law shall be fulfilled. |
|
When |
25 For, for this end was the law given; |
|
ye are weary |
wherefore the law hath become dead unto
us, |
|
he waketh |
and we are made alive in Christ
because of our faith; |
|
morning by morning. [Deut. 11:18-21.] |
yet we keep the law because of the commandments. |
|
He waketh mine ear to hear
|
 |
26 And we talk of Christ, |
 |
we rejoice in Christ, |
 |
we preach of Christ, |
 |
we prophesy of Christ, |
 |
and we write according to our prophecies, |
|
|
as the learned. |
that our children may know |
|
5 The Lord God |
to what source they may look for a
remission of their sins. |
|
hath opened mine ear, |
27 Wherefore, we speak concerning the law |
|
a and I
b was not rebellious,
|
a that our children
b may know the deadness of the law;
a and they,
b by knowing the deadness of the law,
|
|
neither turned away back.
|
may look forward unto that life which is in
Christ,
and know for what end the law was given.
And after the law is fulfilled in Christ,
|
|
6 I gave my back to the smiter, |
that they need not harden their hearts against him
when the law ought to be done away. |
|
and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair. |
28 And now behold, my people, ye are a stiffnecked
people; |
|
I hid not my face from shame and
spitting. |
wherefore, I have spoken plainly
unto you, |
|
7 For the Lord God will help me, therefore shall I
not be confounded. |
that ye cannot
misunderstand. |
|
Therefore have I set my face like a flint, |
And the words which I have spoken |
|
and I know that I shall not be ashamed. |
shall stand as a testimony against you; |
|
8 And the Lord is near, |
for they are sufficient to teach any man |
|
and he justifieth me. |
the right way;
for the right way is to believe in Christ |
|
Who will contend with me?
|
and deny him not;
for by denying him
ye also deny |
|
Let us stand together. |
the prophets and the law. |
|
Who is mine adversary? |
29 And now behold, I say unto you that the right way |
|
Let him come |
is to believe |
|
near
[and he shall abide with you] |
in
[abide in the vine] |
|
me, |
Christ, |
|
and I will smite him |
and deny him not; |
|
with the strength of my mouth. |
and Christ |
|
9 For the Lord God |
is the Holy One of Israel; |
|
will help me.
|
wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship
him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; |
|
And all they |
and if ye |
|
who shall condemn me, |
do this
[worship Christ] [opp.] |
|
behold, all they shall wax old as a garment,
and the moth shall eat them up. |
ye shall in nowise be cast out.
[opp.] |
| 10 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, |
30 And, inasmuch as it shall be expedient, |
|
that obeyeth the voice of
his servant,
that walketh in darkness |
ye must keep the performances
and ordinances [See Isa. 24:5; D&C 1:15,16.] |
|
and hath no light? |
of God [See Acts. 7:47-53;
Isa. 66:1,2,4.] |
|
11 Behold all ye that kindle fire,
that compass yourselves about with sparks,
walk in the light of your fire
and in the sparks which ye have kindled.
|
until the law shall be fulfilled
[Play on words: Afulfilled,@ e.g. empty.]

|
This shall ye have of mine hand--
[See Jacob 4:14; Ezk. 20:25.] |
which was given

ye shall lie down in sorrow.
