Hebrews 12

2 Nephi 9:17-38

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great 17 O the greatness and the justice
a cloud [e.g. glory of the Lord (Isa. 6:4.)] of our God!
of witnesses,
For he executeth all his words, and they have gone forth out of his mouth,
let us lay aside every weight, and his law must be fulfilled.
and the sin which doth so easily beset us, 18 But, behold, the righteous,
and let us run with patience the saints
the race that is set before us, of the Holy One of Israel,
2 Looking unto they who have believed in
Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; the Holy One of Israel,
who . . . [see excerpt below] they who
endured the cross, have endured the crosses of the world,
despising the shame, and despised the shame of it,
and is set down at the right hand they shall inherit
of the throne of God. the kingdom of God,
a ...for the joy [excerpt from above]

    b that was set before him...

    b which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world,

a and their joy shall be full forever.

3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, 19 O the greatness of the mercy of our God, the Holy One of Israel!
lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. For he delivereth his saints
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
from that awful monster the devil, and death, and hell, and that lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment.
5 And ye have forgotten 20 O how great the holiness of our God!
the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, For he knoweth all things, and there is not anything save he knows it.
My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, 21 And he cometh into the world that he may save all men
nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: if they will hearken unto his voice;
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, for behold, he suffereth the pains of all men,
and scourgeth yea, the pains
every of every
son living creature, both men, women, and children,
whom he receiveth. who belong to the family of Adam.
7 If ye endure chastening, 22 And he suffereth this
God dealeth with you that the resurrection might pass upon
as with sons; all men,
for what son is he that all
whom the father chasteneth not?  8 But if ye be without chastisement, might stand before him at the great and judgment day.
whereof all are partakers, 23 And he commandeth all men
then are ye bastards, that they must repent,
and not sons. and be baptized in his name,
a 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us,
.  .  .  b and we gave them reverence:
.  .  .  b shall we not much rather be in subjection
a unto the Father of spirits,
.  .  .  b having perfect faith
a
in the Holy One of Israel,
and live?
or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God.
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 24 And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it.
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: 25 Wherefore, he has given a law;
nevertheless

[on the other hand]

afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit

[not the same for those who do not overcome through the rigors of faith, repentance, baptism, enduring to the end?]

and where there is no law given >>> there is no punishment;

and where there is no punishment >>> there is no condemnation;

and where there is no condemnation >>> the mercies of the Holy One of Israel have claim upon them,

of righteousness [is a gift]

because of the atonement;

unto them which are exercised thereby.

for they are delivered by the power of him.

12 Wherefore lift up [he was lifted up]

26 For the atonement satisfieth

the hands which hang down, [of a scale]

the demands of his justice

and strengthen [JST]

upon all those who have not

the feeble knees;

[be responsible for own sins Msh. 29:34]

the law given to them,

13 And make straight paths for your feet,

that they are delivered

lest that which is lame

from that awful monster,

be turned out of the way;

death and hell,

but let it rather be healed.

and the devil, [pray for your enemies]

14 Follow peace with all men,

and the lake of fire and brimstone,

and holiness,

which is endless torment;

without which no man shall see the Lord:

and they are restored to that God who gave them breath, which is the Holy One of Israel.

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God;

27 But wo unto him that has the law given, yea, that has all the commandments of God, like unto us,

lest any root of bitterness springing up

and that transgresseth them,

trouble you,

and that wasteth the days of his probation,

and thereby many be defiled;

for awful is his state!

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

25 Wherefore, he has given a law;

[covenant blessings]

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing,

and where there is no law given there is no punishment; and where there is no punishment there is no condemnation;

he was rejected:

and where there is no condemnation the mercies of the Holy One of Israel have claim upon them,

for he found no place of repentance,

because of the atonement; for they are delivered by the power of him.

though he sought it carefully with tears.

26 For the atonement satisfieth the demands of his justice upon all those who have not the law given to them,

[first provocation:]

[offer of salvation:]

18 For ye are not come unto

that they are delivered from

the mount [Sanai] that might be touched,

that awful monster,

and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 And the sound of a trumpet,

death and hell, and the devil, and the lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment;

a and the voice of words;

a which voice they that heard

b entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

b and they are restored to

a that God who gave them breath,

a which is the Holy One of Israel.

c 20 (For they could not endure

d that which was commanded,

c 27 But wo unto him that has

d the law given,

c yea, that has

d all the commandments of God, like unto us,

And if so much as a beast touch the mountain,

and that transgresseth them,

it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

and that wasteth the days of his probation,

21 And so terrible

for awful

was the sight,

is his state!

that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

28 O that cunning plan of the evil one!

[Riches of God that are in store:]

[Contrast the Riches of man:]

22 But ye are come unto mount Sion,

O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men!

and unto the city

When they are learned they think they are wise,

of the living God,

and they hearken not unto the counsel of God,

the heavenly Jerusalem,

for they set it aside,

and to an innumerable company of angels,

supposing they know of themselves,

23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn,

wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness

which are written in heaven,

and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish.

and to God the Judge of all,

29 But to be learned is good

and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

if they hearken

24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant,

unto the counsels of God.

and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things

30 But wo unto the rich, who are rich as to the things of the world.  For because they are rich

than that of Abel.

they despise the poor, and they persecute the meek,

25 See that ye refuse not

and their hearts are upon

him that speaketh.

their treasures;

For if they escaped not

wherefore,

who refused [rejected]

their treasure [embraced]

him that spake on earth,

is their God.

much more shall not we escape,

And behold, their treasure shall perish with them also.

if we turn away from him

31 And wo unto the deaf

that speaketh from heaven:  26 Whose voice

that will not hear;

then shook the earth:

for they shall perish.

but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

32 Wo unto the blind that will not see; for they shall perish also.

27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken,

33 Wo unto the uncircumcised of heart, for a knowledge of their iniquities shall smite them

as of things that are made,

at the last day. [height of Babylon's glory]

that those things which cannot be shaken   [e.g. the truth]

34 Wo unto the liar,

may remain.

for he shall be thrust down to hell.

28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom

35 Wo unto the murderer who deliberately killeth,

[The secret combinations through time have followed the Mahan principle by which they obtained kingdoms through murder and intrigue (Ether 8:9)]

which cannot be moved,    [built on a rock]

for he shall die.    [built on sand]

let us have grace,

[there is no name other than Jesus Christ whereby man can be saved]

36 Wo unto them who commit whoredoms, for they shall be thrust down to hell.

[the Lord only is to be the husband of the church/bride]

whereby we may serve God acceptably

37 Yea, wo unto those that worship idols,

with reverence and godly fear:

for the devil of all devils delighteth in them.

29 For our God is a consuming fire

[...whose fire can purge all stain, but which will likewise wrack every soul who refuses such a gift, while filling the righteous with praise, glorying in his presence.]

38 And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.

Story behind this discovery:  More than a decade ago, when I was teaching at the LDS Missionary Training Center, I discovered a strong cross reference between Hebrews 12:2 and 2 Nephi 9:18. Running across this scripture a couple of nights ago, having since discovered a huge parallel that courses the length of the Second Book of Nephi, I became curious as to whether this cross reference I had found back then was actually but one small part of a larger parallel between these two books of scripture. What follows shows that indeed the parallel is far more extensive. And, I would add, what is shown below is probably not complete. I can see that prior to the beginning below, there are some opposite matches, so  the parallel can be pushed at least one or two more verses into the end of Hebrews 11, which probably means the parallel goes on much further. This is probably just the tip of the ice burg.
