Isaiah 28

2 Nephi 28

94

v14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. v31 Cursed is he

[See 2 Ne. 28:32 below]

Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye cursed and scornful men, that rule this
people which is in Jerusalem.

95

v15 Because ye have said,
A We have made a covenant
        B with death,
        B and with hell
A are we at agreement;
A that putteth his trust
        B in man,

96

when the overflowing scourge shall pass through [*the earth],

[*AGT adds]

or maketh flesh

97 it shall not come unto us: his arm,
98 A for we have made lies
        B our refuge,
        B or shall hearken
A unto the precepts of men,

Because ye have said: By making flesh our arm we have made a covenant with death; and by putting our trust in man, with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through the earth, it shall not come unto us: for we have made the lies of the precepts of men our refuge to which we hearken.

99 and under falsehood save their precepts
100

have we hid ourselves:

[See Luke 12:2,3; Morm. 5:8,12 = 2 Ne. 27:10,11; D&C 121:26-31(33,34...).]

shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost.

But the falsehood of the precepts under which you have hid yourselves, shall be manifest by the power of the Holy Ghost.

101

v16 Therefore

v32 Wo be unto the Gentiles,

[See Morm. 5:22(19-24).]

102 thus saith the Lord GOD, saith the Lord God of Hosts!

Therefore, wo be unto the Gentiles, saith the Lord God of Hosts!

103 Behold, I For notwithstanding I
104 lay in Zion for a foundation shall lengthen out mine arm unto them from day to day,
105

a stone,
a tried stone,
a precious corner stone,
a sure foundation:
THEY WILL DENY ME;

[See D&C 133:66,67; 3 Ne. 21:9-11; 28:34; Matt. 21:42-44; JST-Matt. 21:51-56.]

For notwithstanding I have laid in Zion a foundation, lengthening out mine arm unto them from day to day, they will deny me, the stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation.

106 he that believeth nevertheless, I will be merciful unto them, saith the Lord God,
107
[AGT] will not do rashly.
if they will repent
and come unto me;

Nevertheless I will be merciful unto them that believe, saith the Lord God, for if they repent and come unto me, they will not do rashly.

108

v17 Judgment also will I lay to the line,
and righteousness to the plummet:
for mine arm

For mine arm of judgment will I lay to the line, and mine arm of righteousness, to
the plummet.

109

and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies,
and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
v18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled,
and your agreement with hell shall not stand;
when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
is lengthened out

The hail and the waters shall overflow and sweep away the refuge of lies in the hiding place; that your covenantal agreement with death and hell shall not stand, but shall be disannulled when the flooding waters shall pass through, lengthening out.

110

then ye shall be trodden down by it.
v19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you:
for morning by morning shall it pass over,
by day and by night:
all the day long,

Then ye shall be trodden down by it. From the time that it goeth forth--morning by morning, all the day long, and by night--it shall pass over and seize you.

111 and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. saith the Lord God of Hosts.

It shall cause terror merely to hear word of it, saith the Lord God of Hosts, who gives you this report now that you might understand.

Schopenhauer
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
