Alphabetics - n. The alphabetical listings of words contain coded meaning in the surrounding definitions and in the associated numbers. (Sterling D. Allan)

Here we will illustrate this alphabetics phenomenon using the number 888, which is associated with Jesus.  In the process of giving examples of the various methods, we hope you will also appreciate the witnesses these give of the Savior and his ministry -- first and second advents.

Notice location of word

Word 5642 is the very last word in the New Testament lexicon.

The "very last" conveys the idea of "omega," as in "Alpha and Omega."

Notice Etymology

888 achreia (From a (1) . . . )

a is the very first word entry in the New Testament lexicon.  It is word number "1."  It is the "alpha" word, as in "Alpha and Omega."

Tie Together

With the etymology link to the first word, and the synonym/antonym link to the last word, that gives word 888 fit the idea of the first and the last, Alpha and Omega.

Look at neighboring words

This is one of the primary attributes of Alphabetics -- considering the words before and after a given word in its alphabetical sequence.

The word just before word 888 in the New Testament lexicon is

887 achlus A thick mist. A collection of heavy vapors which diverts the rays of light by turning them out of their direct course. (Zodhiates)

"And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:5.)

888 beaysh' to be evil (Gesenius)

"Evil" would be the exact antonym for what Jesus Christ represents, which is "good."

Look at neighboring OT words

890 boshaw' a bad, useless plan (Gesenius)

Notice verbatim word match

Hebrew OT word 890, just next to word 888, has "useless" as part of its definition.  Word 888 in the Greek NT means "useless."  That is the one-word meaning assigned to word 888 in several other locations in Zodhiates' NT lexicon when cited as an antonym or synonym. (see comment above).

Look up Page Number

Page 888 of Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament is four pages into the English Index.  The last word entry on the page is "bow" [e.g. every knee shall bow].  The first entry on the page is:

Beersheba, 100b

'100b' refers to page 100, column two of two.

Notice Page Correlation

Page 100b of Gesenius is just one page prior to where word 888 is listed.  The last word on page 100 is 887.

Look up Gematria of Related Words

The Hebrew word for Messiah is pronounced Mashiyach, spelled mem (40), shin (300), yod (10), cHet (8).  The sum of the numeric  values of the letters that spell Mashiyach is 358.

In the New Testament lexicon, Zodhiates gives one synonym for word 358

358 analos ...
Syn: moros (3474), useless.

Notice verbatim word match

"Useless" [rejected of his own] now seen linked to

(1) word 888 in the NT lexicon,
(2) 888 vicinity word, 890 in the OT lexicon
(3) synonym of NT word 358, which number is the gematria value of Messiah in Hebrew.

Connect Number to Day of Year

The 358' day of the year falls on Christmas eve.  The neighboring word number 359 corresponds to Christmas day.

Connect to Phone Numbers

Switching the digits [see below] of the number 358 includes 835 and 358.  835 is the local phone prefix in Manti Utah, the premier city of gathering for Mormon outcasts. [see write-up.]  358 is the new telephone area code prefix coming in December for areas outside Salt Lake County that are currently 801, the heart of Mormon country. [see write-up.]

Points to Mormons as those called to be the Lord's special people in these latter days.  The full name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Notice Second Tie-in

We saw that the synonym listed for word 358 [Gematria of Messiah in Hebrew] in the NT lexicon is

358 analos ...
Syn: moros (3474), useless.

The alphabetical insertion point of the word "Mormon" transliterated into Greek is two words prior to moros (3474).

Notice Third Tie-in

The definition of word 358 is

358 analos Without saltiness, not having the taste of salt.

Application Scripture

" Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men."  (Matthew 5:13.  See also 3 Nephi 16:15; D&C 101:39,40)

Application Name

Look up 888 x 2 = 1776

1776 is a hallmark date in U.S. history.  It represents a primary turning point in the establishment of this free nation.  It turns out that there is a series of a dozen or so words in the NT lexicon around word 1776 that parallel, year by year, number by number, the founding of America as well as that provide commentary on where we are today in relation to those freedoms and how we have drifted.  [See write-up.]

The word of the Savior does not have to do just with the gospel, but is intricately tied to the proper role of government and ensuring the freedom of all mankind.

Notice 888 in Related Text

W. Cleon Skousen's hallmark textbook, "The Making of America: The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution," ends with page number 888. [Discovered on 11/11/00.  See note1, note2.]

Look up 888 divided by 2 = 444

Word 444 in the NT lexicon is:

444 anthropos Man, a generic name in distinction from gods and the animals.
(IV) (B) The designation, the Son of man, was used by the Lord Jesus to designate His Messiahship.  It is found 81 times in the gospels.

Page Number Echo Notice

The above statement about '81 times' is found on page 181 of Zodhiates.

Taking the ASCII code numeric equivalents time six (A = 6, B = 12, ect.):

MESSIAH = M (78) + E (30) + S (114) + S (114) + I (54 + A (6) + H (48) = 444

Look up 4444 in OT Lexicon

With the idea of 888 divided by two = 444, is the idea of adding one more four to get 4444.

4444 Melchi-shua "king of aid"

Notice Matching Idea

Note that this meaning "king of aid" is analogous to the antonym meaning of word 888: "useful, helpful, propitious."

Try 2222

Under the entry for Christos [Christ], Zodhiates mentions word 2222, "life."

"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35)
"I am come that they might have life" (John 10:10)
"I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6)

Look up Same Number in OT Lexicon

Iesous [Jesus] is word 2424 in the NT lexicon.  Word 2424 in the OT lexicon is:

2424 cHayuth (from 2421) life.

Notice Matching Definitions

So, word 2222, "life" mentioned in the definition for Christos and 2222 being a removed variation of 888, is the same as the definition for word 2424 in the OT lexicon, 2424 being the number corresponding to the word for Jesus in the NT lexicon.

Look up Page 888 in NT Lexicon

The first and the last word on page 888 of Zodhiates' Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament are:

2917 kirma Judgment, sentence, the reason for judgment. (I) The act of judging. (II) (A) The judgments of God.
2929 krino To separate, distinguish, discriminate between good and evil, select, choose out the good.
(III) (A) To sit in judgment.  Spoken in reference to the gospel dispensation, to the judgment of the great day of God as judging the world through Christ.
(B) Spoken of God as judge.
(C) To vindicate, avenge.

A primary role of Messiah is to sit in judgment, both pertaining to the gospel and pertaining to our deeds in relation to government.

Another Vicinity Word and Tie-in

The word two prior to word 888 in the NT lexicon is:

886 acheiropoietos Not made with hands, made or performed without hands.

This concept and the concept of "judgment shall sit" are both major themes of Daniel's prophecies about the kingdom of God.

Look up Another Gematria Value of Messiah

Two different spellings for "Messiah" in Greek, whose gematric value is very close are:

the Messiah - ton Messian = 926

Messiah - Messiou = 37 X 25 = 925

Word 926 in the NT lexicon means:

926 barus Weighty, i.e., important.

Notice Antonym Match

Compare that with these antonyms listed for word 888 in the NT lexicon

888 achreia
anagkaios (316), necessary, needful,
pulutimos (4186), very valuable. (Zodhiates)

Look at Words Around "Jesus"

The word just after Iesous (2424) is

2425 hakanos Sufficient.

Combine Findings for Synthesis

The antonym for 888, "necessary," and the word after Iesous, "sufficient," combine to convey the concept of "necessary and sufficient," which in the scientific world is the axiom by which a theory is proved valid.  The cause must be shown to be both "necessary" to produce the effect as well as "sufficient" to produce it.

Look up Page 888 in Strong's Concordance

Page 888 of James Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible has one entry spanning the entire page

" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1.)

Verily, verily I say unto you . . .

And he said unto them . . .

Notice Matching Hit

Page 925 [Gematria for Messiou] of Zodhiates' NT lexicon is filled with the following definition:

3056 logos Intelligence, word as the expression of that intelligence, discourse, saying, thing.

Look up Etymology of NT Word 888

We already looked at the first half of the etymology for the two-part word achreios (888).  The last half of the word is:

888 achreia (From . . . chreia (5532), utility, usefulness)

Let's look further at how Zodhiates defines word 5532:

5532 chreia (from chreos: chreopheiletes (5533), one who owes a debt.)
(I) ...employment; (II) Need, necessity, want.

So really, with a (1) in Greek meaning "without" then achreia really means "without owing a debt; without need,  necessity or want."  Why then would the word be defined as "useless"?

Now we are getting into some major political ramifications.  Who is it that rules the world in its wicked state?  And how does he rule?  With gold and silver.  Mammon is the foundation of Babylon.  So those unencumbered by the system, without debt, and even without 'employment' by the system, are deemed 'useless' by it.

Hence with a closer look we see that word 888 has to do with civil disobedience against Babylon.

Confirmation of Mammon Thesis

This is confirmed by word definition 5536 at the end of the page:

5536 chrema Something useful or capable of being used. In both the singular and plural it means money.  Business.

Matching Page for Gematria of Christ

This definition for chreia, the second root of word 888, is on page 1480 of Zodhiates.  Now consider this:

Christos [Christ] = X (800) + r (110) + i (10) + s (200) + t (300) + o (70) + s (200) = 1480

Matching Number for 'Jesus Christ' in ASCII code

Also on page 1480 is the following definition and antonym:

5533 chreopheiletes One who owes a debt. Also from chreos: chreia (5532), usage, need.
Ant. daneistes (1157), a lender, creditor.

All Caps ASCII Code

Facing Page Confirmation

So there on page 1480 (Gematria for Christos) is the word chreia, the root for word 888 (Gematria for Iesous).  So we have the gematria for Jesus in Greek and for Christ in Greek, all on one page.

On the facing page is the following:

5537 chrematizo ...(I) Spoken in respect to a divine response, oracle, or declaration.  (II) to do business under someone's name; hence generally, to take or bear a name, to be names, called.
Deriv: (5538), an oracle.
Syn.: (3687), to name; (2028), to surname; (601), to unveil, reveal; (3004), to say, speak.

Matching Words

Notice in the synonym above, that word 3004, "to say" is mentioned.  Remember that page 888 of Strong's Concordance is filled with the entry for verses that contain the word "saying."

Law of Multiple Witnesses

According to the scriptures, "in the mouth of two or three witnesses" shall the truth of a matter be determined.

As has been illustrated extensively in these various Alphabetics commentaries on 888, this phenomenon holds true and is extant in the Alphabetics Code.  A concept is not validated just once, but is usually repeated twice, and often is repeated many times in a variety of ways (witnesses distinct from one another).

Looking at a Vicinity Page

Three pages following page 1480 (Gematric value of the word Christos) is the following word

5547 Christos Anointed. (I) Christ . . . the Messiah.

So the gematria of Christos is 1480, and the word Christos comes on page 1483 of Zodhiates -- very close, showing again that the vicinity phenomenon is significant and foreordained.

Apply Contemporary Meaning

In today's world, 888 is not just another number.  Rather, it is known as a toll-free telephone area code.

Jesus' gift of salvation is "toll free" for those who receive it.

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." (Isaiah 55:1.)

Look up Last Page Number

Another toll-free telephone prefix, the one that came after 888 began to fill up, is 877.

The very last page of definitions in Gesenius' OT lexicon is on page 876, just one digit away from 877 -- again the vicinity principle.

Another Digit Swap Example

6847 Zephnath-paaneah (Joseph)
        - In Egyptian: "salvation or savior of the age"
        - In Hebrew: "revealer of a secret"
8674 [numbers in 6847 flip-flopped. 8674 is last word (omega word) in Old Testament lexicon] gift

Serendipitous Plays on Words

Page 877 is the beginning of the "Grammatical and Analytical Index."

"Grammatical" "Analytical" is a round about way of describing this Alphabetics code approach.

Look up Meaning of Very Last Word

The very last word in the Old Testament lexicon (on page 876 of Gesenius) is

8674 Tatnai gift

The idea of toll-free (877) salvation, which is what Jesus Christ, the alpha and omega secured for us.

Number Digit Swapping

Notice above that the last four words on page 876 of Gesenius are numbered as follows:

They all begin with 867, which is a reversal of the last two digits of 876.

Recall [above] how we did a similar switching of digits for the number 385 to tie in telephone area code 358 and local prefix 835.

Sequential Digits

Notice that the digits 876 are in a reverse incremental sequence. 8.7.6.

Meaning of numbers

The second- and third-to-last words in the OT lexicon are

8671 teshiyiy ninth
8672 tisha
/ tishaw perhaps from 8159 through the idea of a turn to the next or full number ten; nine or ninth.
8673 tishiym ninety

The "nine" in the context of 876 (page number) in reverse conveys the idea of a counting and a rolling over to the next series.  Thus ends the alphabetical sequence of the Old Testament.

Look up Number Written up in Modified ASCII

Going to the ASCII calculator, I looked up the spelled-out version of 888.  This is what the 'alphabetic times six conversion' gave:

Notice Analogous Numbers

The 900 ties into the idea of nine, ninth and ninety in the word definitions at the end of the OT lexicon.  The Correlate idea is that the last word in the NT lexicon ties into word 888 by the antonym/synonym match.

Look up Page Number in English Dictionary

There are several applicable word definitions of interest to our context on page 888 of my Webster's 1971 dictionary.  But this one I find most compelling.

transliterate To express or write in the alphabetic characters of another language; to spell in different characters intended to express the same sound.

This one doesn't tie into Jesus Christ directly, but does allude well to the process of alphabetics being employed in these studies to witness of him.

Analogous Antonym Match

Another word on page 888 of Webster's 1971 dictionary is this definition that comes immediately after the above one.

translucent Transmitting rays of light... -- translucid Transparent; clear.

They are antonyms for word 887 that comes just before word 888 in the NT lexicon:

887 achlus A thick mist. A collection of heavy vapors which diverts the rays of light by turning them out of their direct course. (Zodhiates)

Modified Applications

Another word on page 888 of Webster's 1971 dictionary is

transmogrify To transform into some other person or thing; to change entirely the appearance of.

As we have seen in several previous applications, a literal rendition is not sought, but rather aspects of applicability are sought for instruction.

In this case the word calls to mind the idea of the mighty change of heart wrought by Christ.  It also brings to mind the translation and later resurrection that the Savior underwent.

Look up Bible Chapter Number

The 888th chapter of the Bible is Amos 9 which is a last-days redemption prophecy, including the following verse:

" In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old" (Amos 9:11.)

Shows that the work of Christ was not completed with his first coming but that there is a work in conjunction with the second advent as well.

Look up Page Number in Scriptures

Page 888 in the Bible (LDS King James Version) covers Isaiah 22:21 through 23:15.  Its context coming from the previous page is the unseating of 'Shebna' who has hewed a "sepulchre on high . . . in a rock."  Eliakim, who is "representative of the Messiah" (LDS footnote 20a), is placed in his stead.

21 And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.

This idea of overturning of wickedness for the righteous kingdom of God is implicit in the name "Shiloh" which is associated with Christ.  Those who have sought to wrest the kingdom of our God and his Christ shall be removed and others shall be planted in their stead.

What we have recorded here is but a small sampling.  The number of ways to look things up is nearly without limit.  What is amazing is that virtually every one works to some extent.  Some are extremely convincing, some are not so obvious.  Some are silly, while others are deeply profound.  Some confirm things we already knew.  Others offer fresh insights.  Still others prompt us to begin thinking about possibilities we had never before considered.  Almost like people, the different finds have different personalities.  Each has something to offer in its own way.  Hopefully the presentation here has helped you to see that.  There is, of course, a lot more where this came from, both recorded at this website as well as waiting to be discovered -- maybe by you!
